55 million players
Golf, with it’s 55 million players,
occupies third place in the sport world-rankings, directly behind basketball and volleyball each with 60 million active players. In countries where golf is considered more established, up to 16% of the population are active players (e.g. UK 7%, USA 10%, Canada 16%), in comparison to central Europe where the numbers are less than 0.5%. In Asia, with the exception of Japan (10%), it is not even 0.1%.
We are convinced
that we will see a rise in the number of players in central Europe and Asia over the next decade to bring us more in line with the UK, USA and Canada. Step by step, the breakthrough will come. The vision that someday 10% of European will play golf may seem a little far fetched at present. 35 million European golfers would make the golf industry such an unexpectedly large influence on the economy, creating thousands of jobs in the production, maintenance and service branches.
The fact that golf, in central and southern Europe and Asia, is still largely regarded as an elitist sport is the main reason for it’s relatively slow development. The sport in this part of the globe is still unfortunately dominated by the typical Country Club set-up i.e. Escalated joining and yearly fees for a limited number of members.
Realizing potential means to introduce golf as a sport and help inspire enthusiasm in all age-groups and walks of life. This involves targeting the right groups, providing them with easily accessible and affordable public facilities where they can play. Such facilities, wither a simple driving range, a 9-hole or 18 hole course although open to the general public could be either communally or privately run. When built to a reasonable standard, in the right area, such facilities not only become a welcome asset to the community, but are also profitable companies.
